Albany E. Howarth; English; 1872 - 1936. Twentieth century English architectural and landscape etcher and water-colourist, Albany Howarth first worked as a drawing apprentice in the office of Armstrong, Whitworth. During his career Albany Howarth etched many great architectural views in England, Italy and France. His etchings were usually printed in editions of one hundred and fifty signed impressions.
This superbly atmospheric etching is bright and unfaded, with dark brown intaglio ink lines and very fine detail, drypoint burr and plate tone, the image size measuring approximately 35 cms. x 57 cms, (14 x 22½ ins.) within a fine but evident platemark and impression on a laid paper sheet, measuring 41 cms. x 63 cms. (16 x 25 ins.) with makers watermark. This item will be shipped rolled.
Signed and dated in the image and signed in pencil by the artist in the lower margin, with a series of Artist Proof blindstamps.
Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with slight surface loss to two areas of the sky, not immediately noticeable, and handling marks condusive with age.
