Albert T. Pile
Albert T. Pile; 1882-1981, born in London, educated at King's College and entered the civil service at the age of fifteen. He wished to become a doctor, or missionary and studied anatomy in his spare time, but during the First World War he served in the RAMC at St. Omer, where the wounded men from the battlefield were brought on hospital barges.
Pile painted and sketched for pleasure and never wished to become a professional artist, most of his works done whilst on holiday in Lancashire, Cumbria, Devon, Cornwall, the Isle of Wight, Belgium and various parts of Southern England, very little of his work is signed.
When Albert married, his wife came from Brighouse to which town he retired. Later they moved to Whitby, living in the Stakesby area.
A very fine etching which is bright and unfaded with fine detail, inking and plate tone in black ink. The image measures 10 cms. x 13 cms. (4 x 5 ins.) within a strong plate mark and impression on a laid paper sheet size of 12 cms. x 17 cms. (4½ x 6½ ins.)
Signed in the image and signed and titled by the artist in pencil beneath the image.
Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with handling marks condusive with age.
