Anthony Raine Barker; 1880–1963, British artist, born in Harrow on the Hill, his brother was England-international footballer Richard Raine Barker. He attended Framlingham College, Suffolk, trained as an architect and became a painter in the traditional school of English watercolour as well as an engraver, lithographer and etcher he also began to make drypoint prints from about 1920 and these - as well as the lithographs he was making at the same time - normally depict English rural subjects typically images of shepherds and country scenes in the Sussex Downs. In the 1920s he was a leading member of the Senefelder Club. He published two children’s books illustrated with his own wood-cuts, The Fairyland Express (1925) and Hidden Gold (1926). He restored, largely by his own hand, a 15th-century Yeoman’s Hall House at Benenden in Kent. Barker married Martha Lydia Patricia Russell, daughter of Thomas Russell, a photographer in Chichester, in 1916. Their son Felix Barker was a drama critic.

An original etching with fine detail and rich drypoint burr in black ink, the image measuring approximately 34 cms. x 23 cms. (13 x 9 ins.) within a strong platemark and impression on a wove paper sheet 46 cms. x 29 cms. (18 x 11½ ins.) with full margins and deckle edges.

Signed in pencil by the artist in the lower margin with the edition limited to 75 impressions only.

Unframed and unmounted the condition of the image and sheet is excellent.
