William L. Wyllie

Alfred Brunet-Debaines: French, 1845 - 1900, etcher of street scenes and architecture, Alfred Debaines studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in 1863, and learned etching techniques under Maxime Lalanne and Jules Jacquemart. Brunet-Debaines exhibited his first etchings at the Paris Salon,  and spent much of his career working and living in London and exhibited at the Royal Academy.

The distinguised sea-painter W. L. Wyllie was born in London, but is most closely associated with Rochester and the Medway, and later with Portsmouth. He was born into an artistic family and trained at Heatherley's Academy, and then at the Royal Academy Schools, where he first exhibited in 1868.

An excellent etching with superb fine black ink lines and detail. The image measuring approximately 28 cms. x 12 cms. (11 x 4 ¾ ins.) within a strong platemark and impression on a laid paper sheet 36 cms. x 25 cms. (14 x ins.) with makers watermark.

Signed in the image.

Unframed and unmounted, blank on the reverse, the condition of the image and sheet is good with soiling and handling marks condusive with age.
