Claude Gellee (Lorrain): One of the greatest masters of landscape art. Claude moved to Rome and became the studio assistant to Agostino Tassi he completed his studies in Naples, under Gottfried Wals. Claude de Lorraine's early paintings reflect the dominant Mannerist style of mid seventeenth century Italian art, and around 1640 he began to develop his now famous style where the pastoral serenity and the antique grandeur of the Roman countryside is prevelent.
