Cyril H. Barraud

Cyril Henry Barraud; 1877-1965, Canadian/British etcher born in Barnes, England,  Barraud studied art and then worked as a commercial illustrator.  In 1913, Barraud emigrated to Canada and in 1915 enlisted in the Winnipeg Grenadiers. He went overseas in August that year with the 43rd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was later wounded in the left leg, but recovered and returned to France.The Canadian War Memorials Fund (CWMF) appointed him an official war artist on Nov. 1, 1917.

A fine etching with drypoint, which is bright and unfaded, in black ink, with excellent intaglio ink lines, plate tone, and ink burr, the image size measuring approximately  29 cms. x 21 cms. (11¼  x 8 ins.) within a strong platemark and impression on a wove paper sheet size of  32 cms. x 24 cms. (12½ x 9½ ins.)

Signed and titled in pencil by the artist in the lower margin, the sheet also carries a series of embossed Proof blindstamps beneath the image.

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image is excellent the sheet is good with handling marks condusive with age.
