A fine rare original
Emile Antoine Verpilleux; 1888 – 1964, English artist and engraver, born in Notting Hill, London, of a French father (also called Emile Antoine Verpilleux), and a Scottish mother (Edith Verpilleux, née Beard), Emile studied in France and at the Académie des Beaux Arts in Antwerp. He began printmaking as a wood engraver, but excelled in colour woodcuts. Emile developed his own original technique for producing a subtle gradation of colour across the various blocks used in his printing. He adopted a silhouette style where his subject is backlit by striking colours which would diffuse gradually across the background of the image, as shown in our piece.
This superb print has retained its excellent colouring, bright and unfaded in coloured inks.
The image measures approximately 30 cms. x 23 cms, (11¾ x 9 ins.) printed on wove paper sheet size 33 cms. x 26 cms, (13 x 10 ins.)
Signed in pencil by the artist below the image.
Unmounted and unframed, the condition of the image and sheet is good with a small tear into the left margin not affecting the image, and handling marks condusive with age.
