'Bayonne la Nive'
original etching drawn, etched and signed
Eugene Bejot;1867-1931; French painter and etcher; Born in Paris, Eugene studied at the Academie Julian with Jules Lefebvre and Benjamin Constant. He began etching in 1891, as a pupil of Andre Ibels. Through Félix Buhot, he met Seymour Haden who helped him win admission to the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and was also friends with Bracquemond and Lepère. Bejot’s own technique was both precise and involved, yet his prints have a lightly handed, simplified appearance similar to those of Whistler.
An excellent etching which is bright and unfaded, in black ink, with superb rich raised intaglio ink lines, and a fine wiping of the inked plate resulting in a beautiful plate tone. The image size measuring approximately 23 cms. x 15 cms. (9 x 6 ins.) within a fine platemark and impression, on a chainlink laid paper sheet size of 34 cms. x 23 cms. (13 x 9 ins.) with partial makers watermark.
The sheet is signed, titled and dated in the image bottom left and signed in pencil by the artist in the lower margin.
Unmounted and unframed, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with handling marks condusive witha age.
