Julius Komjáti

Hand signed by the artist

Gyula (Julius)Wanyerka Komjáti; 1894 - 1958, Hungarian etcher. Drafted for service in the First world War, Julius was been one of only two thousand people, out of an original sixteen thousand, to survive over a year’s captivity in the hands of the Romanians.  Julius came to England in 1927, and during his ten year stay most of his etched work was produced. Komjati studied briefly under Malcolm Osborne at South Kensington and began to publish his etchings with the publishing house of H. C. Dickens. In total, seventy-four Komjati etchings were published in London before his return to Hungary. Julius's art is reminiscent of Samuel Palmer in his intense, spiritual expression in landscape.

An etching which has retained its colour, bright and unfaded in black ink, with fine detail and rich ink lines, the image measuring approximately 30 cms x 24 cms. (11¾ x 9½ ins.) within a strong platemark and impression on a wove paper sheet size 32 cms x 27 cms. (13  x 10½ ins.)

Signed and dated in the image and hand signed in ink below the image.

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is good.
