Henri Joseph Harpignies; 1819-1916, French barbizon artist, Henri was a close friend of Corot (the two travelled to Italy together in 1860) Henri had made most of his 45 etchings and drypoints between 1847 and 1853, only making 5 or 6 more. During the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71) he fought with the National Guard at Hérisson, where he would return each summer throughout the 1870s.
A very rare etching, printed in black ink, the image measuring 28 cms. x 20 cms.( 11 x 8 ins.) within a very fine but evident platemark and impression, on a vellum sheet size 36 cms. x 26 cms. (14 x 10 ins.)
Signed and dated in the image and hand signed in ink by the artist with a small remarque vignette etching in the lower margin.
The work is annotated in ink in the lower left corner, dedicating it to his dear friend and companion; Rose Maireau.
Unframed and unmounted, blank on the reverse, the condition of the image and sheet is good with white spotting in the image, but being clean with a light toning to the sheet margins.
