Henry Stuart Brown; 1871- 1941; Henry was born in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland and regarded etching as a hobby to be indulged when not running the family business or fox hunting. His first published works date from 1901 and his subject matter was mostly landscapes worked directly on the plate from nature and reflected of a feeling of plein air. In all he made some 200 prints, because of their scarcity, his etchings do not appear frequently on the auction block, but they often command large prices when they do. The British Museum in London houses the largest known collection of Stuart Brown’s art with over thirty listed etchings.
A fine etching which is bright and unfaded with excellent tonal qualities and raised dark sepia ink lines and fine detail, the image size measuring approximately 25 cms. x 18 cms. (10 x 7 ins.) within a strong platemark and impression on a medium laid paper sheet size of 29 cms. x 23 cms.( 11½ x 9 ins.) with makers watermark.
Signed and dated in the image and signed in ink by the artist in the lower margin.
Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with handling marks condusive with age.
