Hilda M. Pemberton

Hilda Mary (May) (née Pemberton); 1871-1957, decorative designer, painter and etcher born; London. Her father, Frederick B Pemberton, was a noted civil engineer. She was educated at Goldsmith's College and was a skillful and prolific artist who favored dry point etching. She exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Cambrian Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and in Society of Women Artists.

The subject of her art was diverse: scenic and vernacular architecture of the United Kingdom and Cape Town. She married Eli Marsden Wilson A.R.E., A.R.C.A., another noted artist, moving her home from Brockley to Acton and later to Blewbury in Berkshire.

An superb drypoint etching which is bright and unfaded in black ink, with fine detail, plate tone and drypoint burr. The image size measuring approximately 14 cms.  x 19 cms. (x 7½  ins.) within a fine but evident platemark and impression, on a laid paper sheet size of 23 cms. x 28 cms. (9 11 ins.)

Signed in the image and signed in pencil by the artist in the lower margin.

The sheet also carries an Artist Proof embossed blindstamp to the lower margin.

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with handling marks condusive with age.
