‘Sir Reuben Hunt’

original

etching

by

Hubert Freeth

Print number 4 from a small limited edition of only 15 impressions.

Hubert Andrew Freeth; 1912-1986, was a very well known painter and printmaker, whose very fine portrait etchings were unlike his elaborate figure compositions, which were based upon many preparatory sketches, Freeth’s portraits were usually etched directly onto the plate with such spontaneity which gives an immediate insight into the character of his character.

A close friend and contemporary of R.T. Cowern, Freeth was schooled at the Birmingham Art School. During the 1930’s it had become uncommon to issue full formal editions immediately from etching plates, due to the poor state of the commercial etching market. Consequently, Freeth appears to have taken impressions from a plate only when desired and it is this practice which may account for the comparative rarity of his etchings today. He exhibited with the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Painter Etchers, Royal Society of Watercolour Painters, etc. He was elected a full member of the RA in 1965 and has work in many public collections, including the British Museum.

A very fine etching which is bright and unfaded in black ink. The image measuring approximately 21 cms. x 25 cms. (8  x ins)  within a strong plate mark and impression, on a wove paper sheet size 28 cms x 37 cms. (11 x 14½ ins.)

Signed and titled in pencil beneath the image, with the edition 4/15.

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is good, with handling marks condusive with age.
