Open Letter Proof ; Self Portrait, original etching, head and shoulders, with his children Siegfried and Elsa below half-length as a vignette.
Sir Hubert von Herkomer; 1849-1914; Painter and illustrator, born in Germany, his family settled in England where he studied painting at Southampton and the South Kensington Schools. He worked first as an illustrator, but soon achieved great success with his subject paintings depicting the lives of the poor. He turned towards portraiture in the 1880s and became one of the most successful, and wealthy, portraitists of the period he experimented in various media, including mezzotint and enamels.
Herkomer regarded this as his best etching. He described the circumstances of the production of it when on a camping trip to Wales in 1879. 'As I knew the painting of one landscape would not give me sufficient occupation for so many weeks, I travelled with my etching paraphernalia'
This etching has retained its excellent colouring, bright and unfaded with black ink lines and superb detail, the image measuring 19 cms. x 33 cms. (7½ x 13 ins.) within a strong platemark and impression.
Printed on a medium wove paper sheet folio size 35 cms. x 51 cms. (13½ x 20 ins.) with full margins.
Artist signed and dated with Herkomers initials in the plate.
Unmounted and unframed, blank on the reverse, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with handling marks condusive with age.
