An original early copper engraving for the
'Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain'
Sir Godfrey Kneller, 1st Baronet; 1646-1723 German born; (Gottfried Kniller), leading portrait painter in England during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and was court painter to British monarchs from Charles II to George I.
Jacobus Houbraken: Dutch, 1698-1780. One of the most accomplished portrait engravers of the eighteenth century, Houbraken first studied and apprenticed under his father.

His most famous engravings for English publication were those for the historical series, Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain. For each framed portrait of the individuals, Houbraken engraved the delightful vignettes and objects describing the importance of each person.


This original copper engraving is bright and unfaded, with superb black intaglio ink lines, the image measuring approx 22 cms. x 35 cms. (8 ¼  x 13¾ ins.) within a strong platemark and impression.

The engraved sheet is attached to the original folio page 43 with a detailed history of George Byng.

Printed on an early wove paper sheet measuring 23 cms. x 38 cms. ( x 15 ins.) with makers watermark.

Printed beneath the image; 'G. Kneller pinxit....J. Houbraken Sculps. Amst 1747'

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image is good. The sheet has an overall time toning, handling marks, staining and edge wear condusive with age.
