James D. Smillie
James David Smillie; 1833-1909, American artist etcher and painter, born in New York City. James David was taught by his father, James Smillie a well known engraver. In the late 1880's, James David Smillie was commissioned by the Smithsonian Institute to create drypoints, mezzotints, soft ground etchings and aquatints as examples for other artists to follow.
A superb etching with rich brown ink intaglio lines and plate tone. The image measures 17 cms. x 13 cms, (7 x 5 ins.) within a strong platemark and impression, printed on wove paper sheet size 43 cms. x 30 cms. (17 x 12 ins.) with full margins.
Signed and titled in the image, not hand signed.
Unmounted and unframed, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with handling marks condusive with age.
