Sir Edward John Poynter; 1836-1919, Painter of neo-classical subjects. On a visit to Italy he met Frederick, Lord Leighton and his work was greatly influenced by this encounter. Studying in London at the Royal Academy Schools as well as in Paris, his paintings were usually of Greek or Roman classical subjects. Accepted as one of the leading artists of his day, he was elected as President of the Royal Academy in 1896.

James Dobie; 1849-1911; A British etcher who was a prolific copyist of popular subjects by contemporary painters and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1885. Although he continued to copy the work of such Victorian artists as Edward John Poynter and John William Waterhouse, he is better known for his etchings after the genre painter Walter Dendy Sadler.

This etching has retained its excellent colouring, bright and unfaded, with superb detail and black ink intaglio lines, the image measures 55 cms. x 18 cms. (21½ x 7¼ ins.) within a strong platemark.

Printed on a fine chine colle applique on a medium wove paper sheet size 65 cms. x 30 cms. (25½ x 12 ins.)

Signed in the image.

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is good with handling marks condusive with age.
