Johannes Thiel; 1889-1962, German graphic artist and painter born in Speicher, studied at the art academies of Munich and Stuttgart. After being severely wounded as a soldier in the First World War he worked in Freiburg as an etcher, painter and book illustrator. Became well known for his bibliophile illustrations to Molière, Shakespeare and Cervantes, as well as an author and illustrator of children's books with the publishers Herder and Kösel. Since the 1930s, he lived in Kirchzarten in the Black Forest. In his free work he devoted himself to his preferred medium of watercolor and produced numerous commissioned works for the Herder publishing house. In World War II he served as a war artist.

This original etching is bright and unfaded in black ink, the image printed within a fine but evident platemark and impression on a wove paper sheet measuring approximately 31 cms. x 22 cms.(12 x ins.)

Signed in the image and pencil signed by the artist with the edition 40/80 in the lower margin.

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and the sheet is good with handling marks condusive with age.
