Lucien-Marcelin Gautier

Lucien Gautier; French etcher;1850-1915, studied art in Aix-en-Provence under Marius Reynaud, and completed his education in Paris, under Gaucherel. He etched and engraved plates after Corot and Charles Jacque before becoming an original etcher of note. He received medals and awards in France and during his career designed and etched views of Rome, Venice and London.
 

This finely detailed etching is bright and unfaded, with excellent rich black intaglio ink lines and fine detail.  The image measuring approximately 38 cms. x 20 cms. (14¾ x 8  ins.) within a fine but evident platemark and impression on a laid paper sheet size 43 cms. x 29 cms. (17 x 11½ ins.)with makers watermark.

 Published by L'Art and printed by Eudes in Paris in 1881.

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and the sheet is good, with toning and handling marks condusive with age.
