Max Beckmann; 1884 –1950, German painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor, and writer. Although he is classified as an Expressionist artist, he rejected both the term and the movement. In the 1920s, he was associated with the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit), an outgrowth of Expressionism that opposed its introverted emotionalism.
This original etching has retained its colour, bright and unfaded in black ink, with fine detail and plate tone, the image measures approximately 23 cms x 30 cms. (9 x 12 ins.) within a strong platemark and impression.
Printed on a wove paper sheet size 38 cms x 56 cms.(15 x 22 ins.) with full margins and deckle edges.
The sheet is unsigned but is accompanied by a photocopy of an etching of similar style which is signed; Beckmann.
Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is good with some foxing to the margins and handling marks condusive with age.
