A very fine early sepia etching with aquatint

from 'The Italian School of Design' published by William Young Ottley  printed 1818,  Etched by G. Lewis: British, eighteenth century engraver.

William Young Ottley F.A.S.  1771-1836. Studied art under Cuitt and then at the Royal Academy and for ten years in Italy. The Italian School of Design stands as his highest achievement, concentrating upon the masters of the High Renaissance, Ottley started work in 1812, publishing etchings and engravings. His completed collection contained eighty-four plates, engraved by such artists as F. C. Lewis, Luigi Schiavonetti, William Long and Thomas Vivares. In 1833 Ottley was appointed to the post of Keeper of the Prints for the British Museum.

An excellent etching which is bright, unfaded and crisp in rich sepia ink, with fine detail, tone and color.  The image size measuring approximately  33 cms.  x 23 cms.(13  x  9 ins.) within a fine platemark and excellent impression,  on a watermarked wove paper sheet size of 41 cms. x 36 cms.(16¼  x  14 ins.)

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is good, there is a soft crease in the lower sheet and minor handling marks to the margins condusive with age.
