David Y. Cameron
Sir David Y. Cameron; 1865–1945; Landscape painter of architectural subjects and mountains, and etcher. Born in Glasgow and destined for a commercial career, he began evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art and entered the Royal Institution, Edinburgh, as a full-time student. Encouraged to etch by the amateur artist George Stevenson and knighted in 1924, he was appointed King's Painter and Limner in Scotland 1933. Commissioned by the Canadian Government to paint war pictures in France 1917–18.
A fine etching which has retained its excellent colouring, bright and unfaded, in dark brown ink with very fine detail and intaglio ink lines, the image measures 26 cms. x 18 cms. (10¼ x 7 ins.) within a fine but evident platemark, on a wove paper sheet size 31 cms. x 22 cms. (12 x 9 ins.)
Signed and titled in the image.
Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is good, with a light toning to a previous window and edge wear condusive with age.
