by

Frank Short

after the painting by

J. M. W. Turner

Depicting an orange merchantman breaking up aground on a sand bar with boats under sail to right and left and a rowing-boat in front to the left.

Sir Frank Job Short; 1857-1945; In 1883Frank entered the Royal College of Art and became an instructor of etching and the head professor of the engraving school.  He was elected President of the Society of Painter-Etchers and was selected as an academician of the Royal Academy of Art and served as its treasurer.  Short was responsible for the revival of the mezzotint process in England, usually working his plates directly from nature and made many mezzotints after the paintings of Turner and other notable painters, his interpretation of light through the mezzotint process has seldom been matched.

A superbly atmospheric sepia etching, which has bright and unfaded colouring, with very rich sepia ink texturing and detail. The image measures 23 cms. x 16 cms. (9 x ins.) within a strong platemark and impression.

Printed on a medium wove paper sheet size 26 cms. x 20 cms. (10¼ x 8  ins.)

The sheet is signed with the artists initial in a shield bottom right.

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is excellent.
