'Battle For The Standard'

'Raffaello Sanzio Di Urbino'

A very fine early soft ground etching

printed 1812, etched by William Ottley.   from 'The Italian School of Design' published by William Young Ottley.

William Young Ottley F.A.S 1771 - 1836. Studied art under Cuitt and then at the Royal Academy. He went to Italy for ten years, researching and collecting works of Renaissance art. Of all Ottley's works of art, The Italian School of Design stands as his highest achievement. Concentrating upon the masters of the High Renaissance, Ottley started work in 1812, publishing etchings and engravings. Altogether his completed collection contained eighty-four plates, engraved by such artists as F. C. Lewis, Luigi Schiavonetti, William Long and Thomas Vivares. In 1833 Ottley was appointed to the post of Keeper of the Prints for the British Museum.

An excellent etching which is bright, unfaded in sepia brown ink, with fine detail, tone and color.  The image size measuring approximately 43 cms. x 28 cms. (17 x 11 ins.)  within a strong platemark and excellent impression, on a wove paper sheet size of 58 cms. x  43 cms. (23 x 17 ins.) with full margins.

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is excellent, it is a brilliant impression bearing all the fine lines and rich inking of a very early impression and in excellent condition throughout. There is edge wear and handling marks to the margins condusive with age.
