Portrait of Cotrot, dyer in Lyon: elderly man, toothless and large-nosed, seen bust-length, slightly turned to right, wearing hat and unbuttoned jacket over waistcoat.

A fine early etching

Jean-Jacques de Boissieu; 1736–1810,  was a French draughtsman, etcher and engraver Boissieu was born at Lyon, and studied at the École Gratuite de Dessin in his home town, but was mostly self-taught.

The image is printed in black ink, within a strong platemark and impression, on an early  paper sheet measuring approximately 18 cms. x 23 cms. (7 ins. x 9 ins).

Signed in plate lower right: 'DB 1770'

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and the sheet is fair for age, with foxing, soiling, edge wear and handling marks condusive with age.
