Achille-Isidore Gilbert:1828-1899, French painter and etcher, Achille-Isidore studied art in Paris under Couture and de Belloc. During his career Gilbert was frequently commissioned by the Gazette des Beaux-Arts to engrave plates after the designs of Rosa Bonheur, Robert-Fleury, Diaz and others. His etched work in portraiture was particularly noteworthy and he engraved the portraits of such famous individuals as Hector Berlioz, Victor Hugo and Beule.

This superbly detailed etching is bright and unfaded, with excellent rich black intaglio ink lines and fine detail. The image measuring approximately 17 cms. x 21 cms. (6¾ x 8¼ ins.) within a fine and evident platemark and impression on a laid paper sheet size 29 cms. x 43 cms. (11½ x 17 ins.)
Unframed and unmounted, blank on the reverse, the condition of the image is good, the sheet has handling marks and toning condusive with age.
