Albany E. Howarth

Albany E. Howarth; English; 1872 - 1936. Twentieth century architectural and landscape etcher and water-colourist, Albany Howarth first worked as a drawing apprentice in the office of Armstrong, Whitworth. During his career Albany Howarth etched many great architectural views in England, Italy and France. His etchings were usually printed in editions of one hundred and fifty signed impressions.

A Traghetto is Italian for "ferry" so this title probably refers to the water taxi or gondola seen in the image. An atmospheric etching which is bright and unfaded, with black intaglio ink lines and very fine detail, drypoint burr and plate tone, the image size measuring approximately 18 cms. x 19 cms, (7 x 7½ ins.) within a strong platemark and impression on a wove paper sheet, measuring 20 cms. x 29 cms. (8 x 11½ ins.)

Signed in the image and signed and titled in pencil by the artist in the lower margin.

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with handling marks condusive with age.
