Andrew James Jowett Murray 1917-1998, artist painter print maker and etcher, born Tientsin, China, the son of a missionary, he studied at Oxford, Andrew joined the Royal Navy when WW2 broke out. In 1946, he travelled to South Africa from Britain, married Beryl Halsall in Durban; moved to Cape Town in 1950 and was news editor of Cape Town's Catholic weekly The Southern Cross for a number of years. In 1956 he started painting, considering himself to be self-taught; from 1966 to 1970, he operated a Gallery in Cape Town (The Dorp Street Studio); by 1969 he became full-time painter. In 1970 he moved to London; until 1973 he painted in London, Seville, Paris, Perugia and Nice. He showed at various times at the Portal Gallery.
This fine etching is bright and unfaded, with typical cat posture and cloud formations Andrew is known for, printed in coloured inks, with fine detail and plate tone, the image printed within a strong platemark and impression, on a wove paper size 20 cms. x 31 cms. (8 x 12 ins) with full margins.
Signed, dated and titled in pencil by the artist with the edition 2/8.
Unmounted and unframed, blank on the reverse, the condition of the image and the sheet is very good with handling marks condusive with age.
