Charles William Cain

Charles William Cain; 1893-1962  Orientalist etcher and printmaker, studied at the Camberwell School of Art also at the Royal College of Art under Frank Short and became illustrator and cartoonist for the Johannesberg Star newspaper until WWI when he served in India and Mesopotamia.

A fine etching which has bright and unfaded colouring, with fine detail, drypoint burr and plate tone in black ink. The image measuring 32 cms. x 25 cms. (12¾ x 9¾ ins.) within a strong platemark and impression.

Printed on a wove paper sheet size 36 cms. x 29 cms. (14 x 11 ins.)

Signed in the image and signed in ink by the artist in the lower margin, with the edition 73/77.

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is good with handling marks an overall toning condusive with age.
