A very fine copper plate etching after
Claude Gellee (Lorrain): One of the greatest masters of landscape art. Claude moved to Rome and became the studio assistant to Agostino Tassi he completed his studies in Naples, under Gottfried Wals. Claude de Lorraine's early paintings reflect the dominant Mannerist style of mid seventeenth century Italian art, and around 1640 he began to develop his now famous style where the pastoral serenity and the antique grandeur of the Roman countryside is prevelent.
An etching which has retained its color, bright and unfaded in black ink, with fine detail and intaglio lines. The image measuring approx. 19 cms x 13 cms. (7½ x 5¼ ins.) on a laid paper sheet size 20 cms x 16 cms. (8 x 6¼ ins.) with makers watermark.
Signed with an Armand Durand red stamp monogram (circle with crosslines) on the reverse sheet.
Unframed and unmounted, blank on the reverse, the condition of the image and sheet is good, with handling marks an an overall toning condusive with age.
