Cyril H. Barraud
Cyril Henry Barraud; 1877-1965, Canadian/British etcher born in Barnes, England, Barraud studied art and then worked as a commercial illustrator. In 1913, Barraud emigrated to Canada and in 1915 enlisted in the Winnipeg Grenadiers. He went overseas in August that year with the 43rd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was later wounded in the left leg, but recovered and returned to France.The Canadian War Memorials Fund (CWMF) appointed him an official war artist on Nov. 1, 1917.
A fine etching with drypoint, which is bright and unfaded, in black ink, with excellent intaglio ink lines, plate tone, and ink burr, the image size measuring approximately 23 cms. x 21 cms. (9 x 8 ins.) within a strong platemark and impression on a wove paper sheet size of 34 cms. x 29 cms. (13 x 11½ ins.)
Pencil signed by the artist in the lower margin.
Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and the sheet is good with handling marks condusive with age.
