Remarque proof etching
David Law, 1831-1901, Scottish etcher and artist; Law exhibited at the Royal Academy and was founder member of the Royal Society of Painters Etchers, was a member of the Society of British Artists in 1884 becoming its Treasurer in 1887 during the Presidency of James Whistler.
This superb atmospheric proof etching has retained its excellent colouring, bright and unfaded, with excellent raised intaglio, black ink line detail and plate tone.
The image measures approximately 35 cms. x 26 cms, (14 x 10½ ins.) within a strong platemark and impression on a medium paper sheet size 40 cms. x 33 cms. (16 x 13 ins.) laid to a backing for conservation.
Signed in the image and pencil signed by the artist in the lower margin, the sheet also carries a Remarque proof vignette etching and the number 1 in pencil in the lower margin.
Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with handling marks condusive with age.
