Dwight Case Sturges
Dwight Case Sturges; 1874-1940, One of the most acclaimed American etchers of the early twentieth century, studied at the Cowles Art School in Boston with most of his early art being oil paintings. Around 1910 he began to devote himself almost exclusively to the art of original etching.
During the 1920's, Dwight gained a strong international reputation for both his figure studies and landscapes. During this decade his original etchings were published by the influential Kennedy Galleries, Fifth Avenue, New York. All were published in editions of 100 or less. Dwights figure studies were considered as among the finest of his age, and was often compared to the Swedish artist, Anders Zorn.
This original limited edition drypoint etching is bright and unfaded in black ink, with excellent plate mark, plate tone qualities and fine drypoint burr. It has superb raised intaglio ink lines, the image size measuring approximately 20 cms. x 25 cms. (8 x 10 ins.) on medium wove paper sheet 25 cms. x 34 cms.(10 x 13 ins.) with deckle edges.
Signed in the image and pencil signed by the artist in the lower margin.
Unframed and unmounted the condition of the image and the sheet is excellent.
