Effie Spring-Smith

Effie Spring-Smith; 1907–1974, Suffolk painter, born at Doric Place, Woodbridge, daughter of unmarried Liverpool born Annie Darby who was cook to Wilford G. Smith of Doric House, Woodbridge. She studied under George Rushton at the Ipswich School of Art and at under Professor Tonks at the Slade School of Fine Art. A painter of figures, portraits and flowers in oil and watercolour. She married at Hampstead in 1939, Herbert Cutner and her later paintings were signed Cutner. She died at Bromley, Kent.

A very fine and rare etching which is bright and unfaded, with excellent plate tone and detail in black ink, the image measuring approximately 13 cms. x 9 cms, (5 x 3½ ins.) within a strong platemark and impression on a laid paper sheet size of 16 cms. x 13 cms, (6¼ x 5 ins.)

Signed by the artist in pencil in the lower margin.

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with a toning to a previous mat window and handling marks condusive with age.
