Eliza Pratt-Greatorex

Eliza Pratt Greatorex; 1819-1897, painter, etcher, illustrator and teacher, American artist born in Manorhamilton, Ireland. She was the first woman to be elected an associate of the National Academy of Design. She was the daughter of Reverend James Calcott Pratt, and came to New York in 1840, where in 1849 she married Henry Wellington Greatorex. She studied art with William H. Witherspoon and James Hart in New York, with Émile Lambinet in Paris, and also at the Pinakothek in Munich. During 1879 she studied etching with Charles Henri Toussaint and in 1857 she visited England.

This fine original and scarce etching is bright and unfaded, with excellent black ink lines and detailing, the image size measuring approximately 17 cms. x 11 cms. (7 x 4¼ ins.) within a fine but evident platemark on a laid paper sheet  size of 28 cms. x 19 cms.( 11 x 7½ ins.)

Signed, dated and titled in the image.

Unframed and unmounted, blank on the reverse, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with handling marks condusive with age.
