George Soper

George Soper; 1870-1942, British etcher and painter; George is widely known for his depictions of rustic scenes and of animals in motion. Studied etching under Sir Frank Short at the Royal College of Art, he became an expert printmaker and gained recognition during his lifetime as an etcher and later as a wood engraver. Soper's etchings are considered to be among the finest of their time and was said to have been influenced by printmakers as William Palmer Robins, Whistler and Sir George Clausen.

A fine original etching which is bright and unfaded, with excellent detail and plate tone the image printed within a strong platemark and impression measuring approximately 31 cms. x 19 cms. (12 x ins.) on a laid paper sheet size 39 cms. x 28 cms. (15 x 11 ins.) with full margins, deckle edges and makers watermark.

Signed in pencil by the artist in the lower margin.

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with handling marks condusive with age.
