Gerhard Paludanus (von Groeningen, fl. 1560–90). Gerhard Paludanus van Groningen known as Gerard or Groningus or Groenning, engraver and painter and glass maker. He worked mainly in Antwerp in two important workshops, that of the printer Christophe Plantin, and that of the engraver Philipp Galle. Author of several series of engravings: Life of Marie and the Old ones of the life.
A rare and collectable museum piece, an etching which is bright, with unfaded black ink, it has excellent detail and finely inked intaglio lines, the image measuring approx 14 cms. x 10 cms. (5¾ x 3¾ ins.) within a fine but evident platemark and impression on an early laid paper sheet close trimmed to the platemark as was the practise.
Unmounted and unframed, blank on the reverse, the condition of the image and sheet is good with handling marks condusive with age.
