'The Taill of the Uponlandis Mous’

(and the Burges Mous)

..also known as The Twa Mice is a Middle Scots adaptation of Aesop's Fable The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse by the Scottish poet Robert Henryson. Written around the 1480s, it is the second poem in Henryson's collection called The Morall Fabillis of Esope the Phrygian.

Robert Henryson (Robert Henrysoun) was a poet who flourished in Scotland in the period circa 1460–1500

Henry Clarence Whaite; 1895-1978, was first cousin twice removed of his more famous namesake. Henry was himself a respected artist, a painter, wood-engraver, and authority of mediaeval art and culture, there is a large collection of his work at the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester.

A fine engraving which is bright and unfaded in black ink, the image printed within a strong platemark and impression on a hand made wove paper sheet measuring 24 cms. x 31 cms. (9½ x 12 ins.)

Signed and dated by the artist in the image.

Unmounted and unframed, the condition of the image and sheet is good with handling marks condusive with age.
