Ignaz M. Gaugengigl
Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl; 1855-1932, born in Passau, Bavaria, studied art at the Art Academy of Munich as a pupil of William Diez. He travelled to the United States 1880 and settled in Boston until his death. Best known for his portraits of members of the cultural circles of Boston, his meticulous attention to costumes and detailing of his figures earned him the name, 'The Meissonier of Boston’
A fine etching which has superb unfaded rich dark brown intaglio ink lines and detail. The image measuring approximately 12 cms. x 19 cms. (5 x 7¼ ins.) within a strong platemark and impression on a medium wove paper sheet size 18 cms. x 36 cms. (7 x 14 ins.).
Signed by the artist in the image.
Unmounted and unframed, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with handling marks condusive with age.
