Bootje; South Sea Island Native Boat
etching
by
Jan Poortenaar
Jan Christian Poortenaar; 1886-1958, Dutch printmaker; painter/draughtsman, etcher and an extensive traveller and recorder of History. Jan Poortenaar travelled to Java and Bali in the 1920s and this is almost certainly from his travels to the south sea islands (Java, Bali and the Malay Archipelago) during this time. He wrote a book entitled 'An Artist in the tropics of Java and Beyond' with a forward by F. Brangwyn.
A fine and rare naive etching which is bright and unfaded in black ink, the image measuring approximately 7 cms. x 6 cms. (3 x 2¼ ins.) within a strong platemark and impression, on a wove paper sheet size measuring 16 cms. x 14 cms. (6 x 5½ ins.)
The reverse carries several pencil notations and what maybe the artists fingerprints from three inked fingers where the print was drawn from the press!
Pencil signed by the artist with the dedication 'Voor Marietje' (For Marietje)
Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is fair with a faded crease in the upper sheet and handling marks condusive with age.
