John Gidley Withycombe; listed British artist, etcher and painter, exhibited; 1909-1910, born and raised in Somerset. In 1916 he was serving with the Ordnance Survey, first as the Officer in charge of the War Maps Department which was amalgamated after March 1916 with Map Sales and Issues, and was the Officer in charge of the Engraving and Small Scale Division. He wrote two articles in the Geographical Journal: 'Recent productions of the Ordnance Survey' (1925) and 'Lettering on Maps' (1929).
A rare and finely detailed etching which is bright and unfaded, printed in dark grey ink, with rich inking and fine plate tone, the image measuring approximately 19 cms. x 13 cms.( 7½ x 5 ins.) within a strong plate mark and impression.
Printed on a medium wove paper, sheet size 26 cms. x 24 cms. (10¼ x 9½ ins.)
Titled and signed by the artist in pencil in the lower margin.
Unmounted and unframed, the condition of the image is good and the sheet is fair with a repaired separation at the lower platemark and handling marks condusive with age.
