Josef Herman; 1911-2000, Polish-British realist painter who influenced contemporary art, particularly in the United Kingdom. His work often depicted workers as it subject. In 1938 he fled his homeland to Belgium due to the mounting anti-Semitism, in advance of the Germany invasion and outbreak of World War Two. He moved to France and then to the UK, to Scotland and settled in Glasgow in 1940. Though Herman escaped the Nazi invasion and subsequent atrocities, he lost his family in the Holocaust. For eleven years he lived in South Wales and had a unique relationship as a Jewish refugee artist with the mining town of Ystradgynlais, South Wales.
