Joseph Apoux

Joseph Apoux, born in Paris circa 1860. Little is known of the life of this French artist, renowned for for his risqué & titillating etchings, libertine artist, etcher & engraver studied art with Jean-Leon Gerome & exhibited at French Salons circa 1880 - 1910, Creator of the erotic 'Alphabet Pornographique' A fantastic group of striking images, which is typical of the 'fin de siecle' obsessions with sex, death & the bizarre of the French Aesthetic Arts at the end of the 19th century.

A fine drypoint etching, bright and unfaded, in brown ink, the image measuring approximately 18 cms. x 14 cms. (7 x ins.) within a strong platemark and impression.

Printed on a laid paper sheet size; 44 cms. x 31 cms (17 x 12 ins). with deckle edges and makers watermark.

Signed in the image.

Unframed and unmounted,  the condition of the image is excellent and the sheet is good with edge wear and handling marks condusive with age.
