Joseph Gray; 1890-1962: British painter and etcher, educated in South Shields. He traveled and sketched in Russia, Germany, Spain, France and Holland. During the First World War Joseph Gray served first in the Black Watch and then became a war artist for The Graphic. After the war Gray's paintings and engravings were exhibited widely. Joseph also went on to serve in the Second World war as a camouflage artist.
A superbly atmospheric etching with fine detail work in black ink with plate tone and rich drypoint burr, bright and unfaded, the image measures 17 cms. x 13 cms. (7 x 5 ins.) within a strong platemark and impression, on a laid paper sheet size; 23 cms. x 17 cms. (9 x 7 ins.)
Signed in pencil by the artist below the image, the sheet also has the title and the annotation'Trial II' in pencil.
Unframed and unmounted, blank on the reverse, the condition of the image and the sheet is good with handling marks condusive with age.
