Red-crowned crane (Tancho)
(on its nest)
1950
woodblock engraving
by
Kaoru Kawano
Kaoru Kawano; 1916-1965, born in Hokkaido and had studied art at Kawabata Art School. After World War II his reputation became international with solo exhibitions in New York, Seattle and Chicago.
Kaoru made the best use of different grain patterns of the woodblocks to express textures and shapes.
An excellent hand finished print which has retained its colours, bright and unfaded, the image measuring approximately 15 cms x 11 cms. (6 x 4½ ins.) Printed on a medium wove paper sheet size 24 cms x 18 cms. (9½ x 7 ins.) laid to a backing.
The sheet is signed in pencil by the artist, with artist's seal (kaoru) stamp in red ink.
Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image is very good. The sheet has several foxing spots to the margins and handling marks condusive with age.
