Karl Julius Bernhard Mannfeld; 1848-1925, German painter and graphic artist, Karl Mannfeld was born in Dresden, died in Frankfurt am Main. He studied painting under the tutelage of Otto Georgi. From 1895 onwards he was Professor for etching at Städel in Frankfurt am Main.
Using the copperplate in intaglio printing he created landscape- and city etchings, primarily though architectural etchings. One location used to display his etchings was in 1886 in the Berliner Nationalgalerie, dedicated by Lionel von Donop. Drawings from him can be found in museums in Leipzig, Breslau and Berlin.
This fine etching has retained its excellent colouring, bright and unfaded, in black ink with very fine detail, ink lines and plate tone, the image measuring approximately 21 cms. x 15 cms. (8 x 6 ins. ) printed within a strong platemark and impression, on a wove paper sheet 27 cms. x 20 cms. (10½ x 8 ins. )
Signed by the artist in pencil in the lower margin.
Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is good with handling marks condusive with age.
