‘After Sunset’

Proof etching

by

Nathanial Sparks

from a painting by

Henry William Banks Davis.

Nathaniel Sparks 1880-1957; Son of Nathaniel Sparks Senior, a violin restorer, In 1900, he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London where Frank Short, President of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers & Engravers, was Head of the Engraving School.

A fine etching which has retained its excellent colouring, bright and unfaded in black ink with superb detail and plate tone.

The image measures 25 cms. x 16 cms, (10 x 6 ins.) within a fine but evident platemark and impression printed on a wove paper sheet measuring approximately 33 cms. x 25 cms, (13 x 10 ins.)

Signed in pencil by the artist in the lower margin.

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and the sheet is good with a toning to a previous mat window and handling marks condusive with age.
