Paul  Piech

Paul Peter Piech; 1920-1996, American, born in New York to Ukranian parents. Studied at the Cooper Union College of Art and trained as a graphic artist at Dorlands Advertising Agency. During the Second World War he was posted to Britain with the US Eighth Army Air Force where he was known for his nose art on the American bombers, here he met his future wife. After the war he studied printmaking at Chelsea College of Art. After an active life as a graphic designer to advertising agencies, he turned freelance in 1968, teaching at various art colleges. Eventually, he settled in Wales in Porthcawl in Glamorgan where he stayed until his death in 1996. His posters were famous for their sheer artistic skill as well as their hard-hitting political texts & images. Most were protests against social issues.

A rare and scarce lithograph printed in black ink, the image measuring approximately 20 cms. x 28 cms. (8  x 11 ins) within a very fine but evident platemark and impression, printed on a laid paper sheet size 34 cms. x 46 cms. (13 x 18 ins.)

Annotated beneath the image;

'To my dear friend Elmer' and hand signed in ink; Paul Piech 1950

Unframed, and unmounted, the condition of the image is good with some foxing to the margins and handling marks condusive with age.
