Philip Kappel; 1901 - 1981. Etcher and book illustrator Philip Kappel, born in Hartford, Connecticut, graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He also studied with marine artist Philip Little in Salem, Massachusetts and was employed as an artist by several American steamship lines. He made six trips around the world on sailing vessels to gather themes, mainly maritime, for his etchings. His artwork constitutes a record of the shipping industry in the United States at its peak.
This superb etching with drypoint is bright and unfaded, with excellent black ink lines and fine detail. The image size measuring approximately 16 cms. x 25 cms. (6½ x 9¾ ins.) within a strong plate mark and impression. Printed on a wove paper sheet size 23 cms. x 29 cms. (9 x 11½ ins.) with deckle edges and makers watermark.
Signed and titled in pencil by the artist beneath the image.
Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is good with handling marks condusive with age.
