Depicting the charge of C Squadron 5th Lancers at Elandslaagte 1899 during the Boer War.
Richard Caton Woodville; 1856 –1927, English artist and illustrator who is best known for being one of the most prolific and effective painters of battle scenes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
An original remarque proof lithograph in black ink with excellent detail and textures, the image measures 51 cms. x 76 cms. (20 x 30 ins) printed within a strong platemark and impression on a chine colle applique paper sheet on a wove paper sheet size 72 cms. x 100 cms. (28 x 39 ins.) laid to a canvas backing.
Signed in pencil by the artist in the lower margin, signed and dated in the stone, the sheet also carries an Printsellers Proof embossed blindstamp in the lower margin.
Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is excellent for a 117 year old paper artifact. The sheet has toning, soiling, spotted foxing, edge wear and handling marks condusive with age.
